USA as Lone Superpower, Good or Bad?

Is the world in a better situation today, with the USA as the only superpower, than it was during the cold war? Also, would you rather have another state in this role, and if so, who and why?

For all the faults of Bush, The Nation he governs is a staunch ally of Britain, and historically we have more a kin to the USA than we do to the EU. More of our People have been killed by Europeans than by Americans or even terrorists! If the US wanted to be insular, than we would all suffer (look at the lead up to the 1st & 2nd World Wars)!
